My names Green and I'm gardening right? OK, ok sorry.)

As some of you may know this blog has been lacking in direction and regular updates, but that ends now. Now there's my vaguely menacing start and onto the meat of this.

Recently I have started to get into gardening, now settle down, whilst I'm the first to admit I'm old before my age I'm not quite entering the twilight of my lifetime. More sort of the tea time, especially when you consider food weighs heavily in the matter.

Yes my interest in gardening is solely geared towards the growing of food, now pretty flowers may occur but rest assured these are side effects what I want is usually down at the root end.

Now this blog has two aims one is to follow the events of my soon to be garden, in doing so spilling out my hopes and joys of what may come and the second being that I'm terrified of becoming rusty (writing occurs little here I'm disgraced to admit). So recently I have started to take an interest in growing my own food, now despite over the last year or so becoming a bit of a foodie I have always been a brutal carnivore, I mean I believe that a meals not complete without something dying for it.

Now meat is fantastic and anybody who abhors it is a fool in my book, but meat can't be everything it needs something to party with. This is where the problems begin, and my problem is with fruit and veg.

From what I've read food from your own garden is unbeatable. If there is a real difference between shop bought and home grown food then maybe I can get myself to eat for both culinary and nutritional benefits, so with that in mind I've decided to plant what I can and see what happens, I mean how hard can it be? Seeds want to grow, its what they do all I will be doing is playing the role of chaperone.

So maybe this time of year isn't the best to be growing in but hey, I'm not the kind of person to wait around when I've got a idea in my head. Here I go then, I begin on my green fingered quest and hopefully come spring time I'll be quite literary reaping the benefits. I do promise to regularly update those who care about how it all doing, I mean if I'm going to commit to watering and nurturing plants everyday the very least I could do is type in a few extra words here and there.

Now its not every vegetable that I dislike, I wouldn't be British if I said I hated potatoes now would I and I absolutely adore onions and all of its family including reds, garlic, leeks etc... but I feel that I need to widen this range considerably as its woefully under-represented the brassica and legume groups (that's leafs and beans to laymen, get me and reading up on what I'm doing, we call that shit research). So that's veg, I do eat it but definably not enough of it. Fruit is a different matter entirely, I eat no fresh fruit whatsoever if its been cooked with or dried then I'm fine, its the raw state that troubles me. It's the texture and the unbelievable sweetness. The sweetness really gets me, to me every fruit just seems so amazingly tart, I can't explain it other than perhaps its a child hood of E numbers thing.

The ultimate aim I have is too own my own smallholding, where I can reign I a largely self sufficient manner growing what I can and raising goats, cows and chickens for milk, cheese and eggs. But until then I have to make do with a few pots and crates until soon I will have a garden of my very own then the fun can really start. There will be fun and hijinks and all sort of nice stuff including lots of pictures and recipes and all that ilk.

Catch you later, yeah? x

Have a go day

A day for university of Wolverhampton freshers for 08/09

Have a go day
Yesterday saw ‘have a go day’ take over the students union and I must say I am very disappointed in you all! Barely anybody turned up. In fact I think the only people there where our beloved best mates.
There were a variety of activities on offer including Knitting, Balloon modeling, Capoeira and Radio presenting. Annoyingly I didn’t get a chance to have a go at the radio presenting malarkey as I had to nip of for an induction meeting, you know how it is. I did however have a go at all the other activities and here’s how they went...

Balloon Modeling: in a word it was frankly, Awesome, who knew the sheer wonders you could create plastic and air. We made dogs and camels and flowers. Sadly dear reader my camel burst shortly after creation, the teacher told me I had done it wrong but I persevered and failed. There’s probably some morale in that somewhere. I also made a Franklin my beloved dog but sadly it burst while I was in MC block, might explain the banshee wails you heard around half three today. My flower lives on though.

Knitting: As I knew how to knit in the first place there wasn’t much for me to learn, I did get told how to cast on using my thumb which gives you looser stitches and how to purl. My next project now is to knit a cardigan, and the teacher assures me I can drop by whenever I need advice.

Capoeira: This was absolutely brilliant, I only got to do 15 minutes and I wish I could have had much more time. Mind you I was completely dog tired after only fifteen minutes.
For those of you not in the know Capoeira is a Brazilian marital art developed by African slaves who disguised their fights by developing their entire system of combat so that the appeared to be a form of dance.
I learnt how to do the basic stance moving too and fro foot to foot and how to do two kicks, a straight and a sort of crescent kick. I was also shown how to perform escapes. Because I am a bit rubbish I can’t for the life of me remember what the moves where called.
I really enjoyed what I did and I talked with Ken Harris who is a sound guy and instructs the classes, which will take place on Saturdays in the sports hall costing around three pound, I would strongly recommended turning up for one session it’s a great laugh and a good way to keep fit.

Stephen Green

A old interview

Kenn Rushworth

What did you think of last night?
Last night, venue wasn’t bad. The sound levels kept slipping round and it was really disorganized.

What do you think of the local music scene?
There’s actually a lot more bands than people know off, so many of them are just music by numbers. Just people trying to look cool and get laid, there’s no actually passion for the music.

Where you surprised that your first gig was at the cavern club?
I was, yeah it was weird. I was terrified.

How would you describe your music?
Our music ermm, at first we wrote songs we can’t find words for. Stuff you can’t find words for.

When you play you give the impression that you improvise
Only in one song (The Plough), we used to mess about and go all over the place, but now were more concise. We didn’t start out to be different, we just happen to be different. We tried to be unique, I mean we are influenced you can see that in the way we leave notes hanging.

What is your music trying to achieve?
We just enjoy playing. We make a record so people feel good and relaxed.
Are you trying to put a message across?
When we first started writing a lot of mates where having a hard time, so we try to make music to cheer people up and give hope.

What happened to the old Team Photo, is that dead now?
Yeah pretty much, originally it was just me. We got a few bands from around the country and put on shows for them. One band (One Toy Soldier) got signed after one gig. But yeah the whole promotion element is gone.

How long have you been playing?
Erm started in year nine on and off, so I have played for six or seven years. I am self taught.

You’re good
Haha, I practiced a lot.

What’s next for (team) Photo?
Were recording an EP in December, one week before Christmas. It will be released early next year, then were going to do a bit of a tour.
What’s the deal with the EP?
Were going to give it out for free, the idea is that we are going to do loads of fancy artwork and then just hand out loads at gigs, we want to make something special.

What’s it called?
Well we have a name, but I think at the minute Kez (the guitarist) wants to keep it under wraps. Threnody For Spring will be on it.

Yeah I love that song
It’s a dark green. When I play a song I associate whatever I hear with colours. That’s how most of our stuff came about.

A Stab in the dark, An afternoon with Richard Brook.

Firstly the interview,

How and when did you become interested in acupuncture?

It was when I was 17, I was already interested in yoga and Ti chi and its grown from there. I first properly started in my early 20's around 2004. I actually use to live with a new age community in Scotland and from that I have tried to make every part of my life holistic.

I sort of found my course through having a vision in a native American dance ceremony, at the time it didn't make much sense, but after I ended up at open night at a college a started thinking about it and what it could mean. Then absolutely by coincidence the instructor started talking about things that had appeared in my vision, I got goosebumps and it became clear that this was something I needed to do.

What type of training did you receive prior to obtaining your license?

I had bit of training before I started on acupuncture, some energy healing with my hands and reflexology but not to any real accredited standard.

I have a degree in food technology, which I saw as more similar to art, It was all to do with natural cycles.

Do you think a patients attitude towards acupuncture influences the success or failure of the treatments?

No, I believe that if some ones got that mindset it won't matter. It will still work. I think that them not believing in it is a sign of them losing touch with nature.

What about pain, do you think if somebody thinks its going to hurt it will?

Well every one has their own personal pain threshold. But feeling pain is a good thing, remember its just your body telling you what's what. It's the feeling of being connected with nature.

What might a typical treatment entail?

I start with a consultation and from that I'll try to gather what needs attention. Before I start with the actual treatment I'll also do a few physical exams to get a bit of diagnostic information, each exam I do gives me an idea of what's going on in your body.

How long would a typical treatment last?

The first will usually be around two hours with follow up treatments around forty five minutes.

My experience.

I must admit to prospect of acupuncture was daunting, now I'm no stranger to needles having my fair share of tattoo's and I have had pretty much every other holistic therapy under the sun.

But there will always be something about acupuncture.

The first thing everyone's wondering about is does it hurt? Well yes and no, some bits hurt and others I barely felt go in. The worst for me was the forehead and the inner arms and wrists. I should consider myself lucky as according to Rich traditionally instead of having a needle either side of the wrist you have one going straight through.

To be honest I did feel very relaxed during the treatment, but it's hard to say what its done to me in the following weeks as I didn't really have anything wrong with me.

But I do have to say lying there in my boxers with needles in my chest was a very surreal experience. Although as Rich said this is text book acupuncture action.

Richard uses a very traditional approach, which is called the five point style. It has a lot to do with natural living and communicating with nature, as Richard says we have lived for thousands of years with nature but now we seem to of fallen out with it, and it seems the more we try the more we mess up. We need to try to get it back.

I would recommend acupuncture to people and not just for physical but for emotional pain, one particular thing Richard mentioned is that its good for stress. Great news for all you dissertation stretched students out there. Even greater news is that he is willing to offer a huge student discount.

Usual treatments cost £55 to start and £35 for subsequent treatment, But for students he's asking just £15 per session.

Drugs shame and football report.

Too continue on the spate of today's posting here's a selection of things i have worked on as part of my course.

Drugs shame for football ace.
AFC Telford striker, Terry Fearns has been arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.
The 31 year old veteran was arrested after a drugs raid on his home in the Maghul area of Sefton, Merseyside on Wednesday 3rd March.

Lee Carter the Chairman of AFC Telford United has issued a statement explaining the short term future of Terry Fearns at the club. It read “AFC Telford United have written to Terry Fearns informing him of our intention to suspend him for a period of two weeks without pay.”
The suspension is due to take effect from Monday, as of yet Mr Fearns has yet to make an appeal.

The club are aware of the situation but have gone on record as saying that it is “ totally unbeknown and unrelated to the club”.

Currently no charges have been brought against Mr Fearns and he has been released on bail until May.

A fictional match report.

A late strike from Ashely Young was enough to pound more misery on local rival’s West Bromwich Albion as they continue to push for the elusive champions’ league place

Villa should have made sure of the points in normal time as they missed guilt edged chances either side of half time with John Carew coming close in the 60th minute when his volley from 12 yards crashed against the woodwork.

The defeat leaves Albion bottom of the table at Christmas and they will be hoping for a repeat performance of the 04/05 season when they completed the ‘great escape’ under former boss Bryan Robson.

As Albion continued to frustrate Aston Villa, tempers boiled over in the 80th minute as Stylian Petrov was shown his second yellow card of the match for a dangerous tackle on Albion captain Jonathan Greening, the first coming 3 minutes earlier for a late tackle on Robert Koren

A major talking point in the clash at Villa Park was the penalty claim in the 10th minute. Ashley Young went down under the challenge of Paul Robonson in front of the holte end only for referee Howard Webb to deny the Villians the chance to take the lead from the spot.

This proved a crucial victory for Villa as the festive period holds no let up as they chase the champions league places. Visiting Anfield and hosting world champions Manchester United in the next few days will really test Villa champions’ league credentials.

Martin O’Neill was delighted with the win over the baggies and quoted on Ashley Young
“Obviously I’m especially delighted for Ashley Young. You know he’s great lad”
On the other hand, Tony Mowbray was still upbeat about his side’s chances of survival stating there are more than 50 points to play for and we will continue to play the right football as Long as I am in charge of this club.

Student Groan

I mean is it just me or are they genuinely malicious to student kind? I mean do they actually get a kick out of torturing us?
Yes they give us money so I suppose we shouldn’t moan, but I would add, they don’t half make us jump through hoops for it.
What do you think the average amount of forms a student has to complete in order to get a loan? Yes that’s right it’s thirteen hundred. What makes them so stony hearted? Then again I suppose sitting at a phone all day deciding who gets money and who doesn’t would get anyone going on a massive power trip. Then again on the other side I suppose giving students money to piss away every day must get a little annoying.

Now I don’t want to accuse the Student Loans Company of been a massive unorganised mess, but it just is. After I had trouble getting my loan I phoned up to ask what was wrong, they actually spent ten minutes trying to convince me that I hadn’t applied. Also the last time I checked three working days does not equal roughly two and a half weeks.

And that’s not the start of my trouble, after negotiating the terms for the release of my drinking budget. I was told by them that I shouldn’t have bothered applying online as it hardly ever worked and entered you into the system…
Fantastic.

I’m not the only other student with issues; the amount they give you seems completely random, I know people how get one thousand and people who get two thousand and any number in between. The official line is that it’s your parent’s income that affects the amount of loan you get.
Bollocks.

People have put down the exact same thing and still get different amounts, what you get depends on the mood of the button presser who we can only surmise is jealous that we bright young things are tearing up the black country while their stuck in Glasgow tapping keys.

The worst case I have heard is off one poor soul who sadly lost one of her parents, the student company have refused to take this into account. So she gets the bare minimum despite the fact that her household income has dropped by something like 70%.

But all is not lost as today I received my first instalment, two days after everyone else got their second through. My late arrival of funds means I am well overdue on my rent payment which brings me onto another student friendly organisation.

Has anyone had to dabble with the Universities financial department yet? For two months now I have been appealing to be released from my contract on the grounds that I can’t pay. Not good enough grounds apparently, so instead of releasing me because I can’t afford it their going to carry on charging me money I don’t have and because of this I have been blocked off every university system, makes getting assignments done and handed in a bit tricky.

So it looks like it’s going to be as hard as it was getting out of halls as it was getting in, can anyone think back to the fault with the online form to register accommodation? The genius form which every time you logged in to approve your offer looped you right back to the login screen?

Jeez Louise, anybody have trouble getting connected to the Internet at halls? Yeah thought so, it’s pathetic, you can go on for hours about the wonders of Cisco Clean Access, is there a particular reason why F-Secure the recommended Anti Virus blocks Cisco from popping up? Yeah, sometimes I really wish I hadn’t bothered coming to this polytechnic.

Jay's Cafe

If you at any point in your time in university have wondered out of the Stafford Street back entrance, then it’s a good bet that you have caught sight of Jay’s café.
Jay’s café, which is run by Tony and his wife Chris, is possibly my favourite thing about Wolverhampton.
There have been times at when the course is getting to me and those six thousand words haven’t been writing themselves, times when the only option seems despair or plagiarism. It’s at times like these when you need to get yourself to Jay’s for a special.

I truly believe that a Jay’s special is the ambrosia (the famed ancient Greek food of the gods, not rice pudding) of our times, as soon as you mop up the last bit of egg yolk your back and ready for anything. You just can’t beat egg, bacon, sausage, beans and tomato with a side of toast and tea.

In these cash strapped times £3.50 is by no means the cheapest breakfast you can find out in Wolves’ but it will be the best, you go to Jay’s for the ambiance, the feeling of the place. It’s just genuinely a nice place to be, He really goes out of his way to make you feel at home.

There will always be a place for greasy spoon café’s, deep down every health conscious busybody knows how good they are. Sitting down to a full English at a sticky plastic table is one of life’s greatest pleasures. You can moan about how unhealthy they are all you want but I would add I don’t give a fuck, it’s good and I like it, what other justification is needed.

So everyone get yourself down to 175 Stafford Street for a special, I’m on my way there now, maybe I’ll just see you there.

Rallying for print

Now I understand that its been rather a while since my last post, but nether less I'm going to pursue the same thought.

Now a few people mentioned various points in the last blog, alas nobody mentioned the delicious irony of me condemning the Internet via the Internet but what can you do. One of the points that stuck out was a discussion of credibility.

Now sure there probably somewhere professional writers on the Internet but I stick to my guns on the decision that most of them don't have a clue, now my delightful associate Mr. Heid pointed out that, yeah sure you can't believe everything you read in on the Internet but then you can't trust everything you read in the newspapers either. Fair point, a lot of stuff you find in the papers these days is miserable, boring, insipid junk.

There is a reason for this, and again it's the big scary wold wide webs fault. The Internet is instant, I click publish post and poof! you all get to read what I think, lucky you.
Papers can't deal with this immediacy, there limited to two maybe three editions a day.
Because (blah blah blah, bad grammar don't start a sentence...) of this the old titans of news are having too move away from news. Its imposable for them to keep up, so there we get the rise of celebrity journalism, which shamefully has become big business.

Think about that, we have made these feckless scum buckets into big news. Bad general public go and sit in the corner.

And this is why print suffers, because its last resort is this nonsense and by retreating to this it has lost all creditably. Goodbye old friend I won't forget you.

I heart Gutenberg

I propose a revolution, the internet is becoming too big for its boots. The latest thing it now threatens is our beloved print newspapers. Ever since the Gutenberg press was first invented print journalism has been a mainstay in our news consumption, a mainstay in our life. Now I know things have been a bit shaky since the idea of celeb ‘journalism’ first reared its ugly head, but print has always been there for us and it has always been the true embodiment of one of the main pillars of democracy, free speech.
Now they say the information super highway is true democracy, sure but what is the internet really good for, yeah that’s right pornography, Facebook and illegal downloads.

I mean do we really want to place journalism in the hands of socially inept teenagers who mindlessly bicker over discussion boards? Okay so the online news sphere has bloated and burst all over the show and there’s news ‘content’ (oh what a woeful term) flashing back and too, but how much of this is intelligent, well written journalism? Okay some maybe calling all internet journalism biased, offensive rubbish is foolish, but well frankly it is.

The only news sites worthy of visiting are either the BBC or the online versions of Print papers, well face it you may as well watch the box or actually read a paper. As the great Ernest Hemmingway said,

“The most essential gift for a writer is a built in, shock proof shit-detector.”

You really can’t believe anything you read on the internet, and even if you can it’s properly not worth reading. Who invented comments for news stories? Why? Why give terminally boring people the chance to comment on things they don’t understand.

True, print has its far share of pointless individuals but for the majority they are actually professional writers who have earned the right to write. These reporters know how to spot a story and they know how to write. Isn’t it best to let a professional loose with a pen instead of some joker who just because he knows how to sit in a chair and figured out how to type thinks his opinion should be heard the world over.

And how can having your eyes burned out by fake artificial whiteness ever compare to having your fingers gently stained by newsprint.

December

Today brings a change in the direction of this blog, no longer will be solely wittering on about food, now i will be expanding outwards and hopefully upwards.

xx

Chained to the radiator and not the sink

Apologies again for my absence , to make amends i offer you the recipe for my favourite meal,
Steak and saute potatoes. to be honest i thought sushi would be a piece of cake, apparently not as it turns out, i think the main problem was the fact i seem to be wholly incapable of cooking rice.

On the whole it turned out to be well passable, i think one of the main problems i think was the fact we made them far two thick, but yeah it all came down to me not being able to make rice, instead coming out with some dire stodge mix, we used smoked Salmon and haddock for the filling, with my sweetheart using tuna (urgh to be a little brave we went for something we've both never tried before, we deiced on risotto. Now not only have i never attempted to cook this before i have never even tried it in my life, but having seen it done on the f word last night i thought, it can't be that though can it?

The recipe we used was rather easy and just involved lightly frying onion and garlic in a pan before adding the rice and white wine. After the we had been absorbed we added fish stock ladle by ladle until after about 15 minutes it was ready.
I rubbed two fillets of Haddock with salt, pepper and a little of the wine before grilling them lightly, they were then flaked into the risotto.
It really did taste fantastic and i was heartily impressed with my first taste of risotto, possible more so by the fact that it was cooked by my and my girlfriends fair hands (much fairer in her case).

Later on we ventured out for muffins, as you know one does, i thought we have them plan when we could have them with yellow gold! so the idea was born for an evening repast of muffins and custard. I was handed a can and upon opening it i found it was rice pudding instead! OH no alas i hear you cry, but not too fear dear reader we created our own custard being the daring individuals we are. It was really rather simple just two egg yolks whisked with milk, sugar and vanilla before being brought to the boil on the hob, a little runny but rather good.

xx

Alive, well in a round about sort of way.

Hmm it seems that perhaps the curry pork was a bad idea as it left me feeling a bit ill yesterday, though to be honest yesterday was a good day for cooking.
First off me and my girlfriend did a spot of baking resulting in a ginger and Cinnamon cake with lemon butter icing.
